ASIAN EDUCATION STUDENT ORGANIZATION
March 10, 1992
To: University Center Activities, Texas Tech University.
RE: nomination of advisor of the year.
Dr. Roy E.Howard is the founder and has been one of the advisors of the Asian Educational Student Organization in the College of Education for more than 3 years.
Dr. Howard's devotion to his international student organization indicates that he loves his students, as well as his career in bilingual education. He is the only person at TTU who corrects the misconception that bilingual means English and Spanish. That is why he can attract a lot of Asian students into this program.
He cares for the students in many ways, for example:
1. He firmly encourages the students to attend professional conferences at different levels. During 1991-1992, the students went to two conferences: LAABE and NABE.
2. He warm-heartedly helps the students with their academic difficulties, especially langauge problems. He is never tired of answering questions.
3. He constantly writes proposals not only to develop bilingual programs, but also to help the students both academically and financially.
4. He is a member of the scholarship committee. He never gives up speaking for the international students who have shown academic achievement and are really in a bad finacial need.
5. He tries hard to help the student organization keep going smoothly and actively. He gives advice every now and then so that the students love their organization and have had a variety of activities. Is is an energetic and dynamic organization.
6. He respects other cultures and languages highly and loses no opportunities to learn them. He is able to speak a little of each of these languages for simple greetings or communications which the students appreciate very much.
7. He enthusiastically participates in almost every activity in the organization, such as election of officers and other meetings and discussions, culture exhibits, food festivals, pot-lucks, etc. The students always believe he is one of them.
8. He helps the students establish good relationships between different nations. The organization now consists of studentsw from the People's Republic of China, the Republic of China, Hong Kong, India, Korea, Vietnam, Turkey, and others.
We highly respect Dr. Howard's work for our organization and recommend him as the Advisor of the Year.
