II. LANGUAGE AND CULTURE
B. FOCUS: TEACHING LANGUAGE AND
CULTURE
I have been teaching
with music since 1965, and have been formally researching
the use of music by regular classroom teachers to teach language,
culture, and other classroom topics since 1985. The greater part
of my research and creative productivity has gone into this focus
since then resulting in grants, exhibits, creative works, volumes
of instructional materials, conference presentations, articles,
and many presentations in schools.
Since I am not a member of any of the language minority groups that I serve, I have developed a strategy which allows me a role in these communities: music. I am very visible and accepted as a musician. I believe that the time I spend tuning pianos, composing, performing with various instruments in *musical groups, and story telling in the schools contributes to my aesthetic perspective, and my ability to connect to the community and the local students.
