Methods: I will compile methods and materials appropriate
for Indian Education for intensive instruction and demonstration.
I will use a variety of presentation methods to maintain interest
and address various learning styles in my classroom. I will focus
on demonstrating specific strategies that my students could use
in their classrooms. I will continue to add new materials and
ideas to my exisiting courses, and support the adjuncts in my
program.
School Visits: I will conduct school visits with presentations
to test teaching methods with students pre-K through secondary.
I will go upon invitation of the school personnel, and contact
the principal in advance of the visits. I will demonstrate strategies
from the best practices of the field of Bilingual Education, and
share my experiences in class with my students.

2. Objective: Student Advisement Process Select

Office hours: I have arranged my office hours in the
late afternoon to match the schedules of the teachers. Also, I
am in my office with the door open the greater part of three days.
I will keep the office personnel advised of my location and phone
numbers when not in the office.
Advisement : I will coordinate advisement with the Gallup
faculty. I will gain GGSC approval for the MAT degree plans and
the TESOL endorsement plans of each student before submitting
to the SOE. I will conduct a review of all my advisees, create
a data base, and communicate with each of them about their status.

3. Objective: Scholarship, Research, or other Creative Activity

Scholarship:I will submit proposals for conference
presentations on my research in bilingual education and ESL. I
will attend local, state and national conferences in my field
such as the National Association for Bilingual Education, the
New Mexico Association for Bilingual Education, Teachers of English
to Speakers of Other Languages, the National Association for Multicultural
Education and others.
I attended the National Association for Multicultural
Education, took 14 pages of notes, and shared what I learned with
my students. I contributed ideas from the conference in an SOE
meeting, setting in motion a reevaluation of admissions policies.
Portfolio including philosophy and core beliefs:
Research: I will begin a new research project consistent with
my previous studies that will document the use of music in the
classroom. I will give particular emphasis (for the first time)
on the use of music that represents tribal languages and cultures.
I will integrate my previous studies and publications into my
coursework.
Other Creative Activity: I will continue my monthly cultural
presentations in the local schools in order to further my knowledge
of students and teachers, and to contribute to the orientation
of teachers by integrating culture and the arts in the curriculum.
I will compose new music for the schools in the styles of the
native people of the area. I will publish a series of storybooks
for children based on the stories I tell in the schools. This
is an ongoing project, with additional stories and books each
year. I will update and professionalize previous publications,
including new taping and mastering of tapes.

4. Objective: Professional Contributions

Professional Organizations: I will serve as a representative
of WNMU to the Northern New Mexico Consortium for Bilingual Education
beginning September, 1997, serve on the board (as Secretary) of
the New Mexico Association for Bilingual Education beginning July,
1997, and publish the following newsletters: "Bilingual Basics",
International TESOL (January and July); and "El Noticiero",
New Mexico Association for Bilingual Education (quarterly). I
serve as the general editor, I compose most articles, and do the
layout and other publishing tasks. In February I was elected as
editor of the newsletter for the National Association for Bilingual
Education Special Interest Group: American Indian/Alaska Native
(AIAN) and as a member of the AIAN Council.
Local Community: My contribution to the university community
includes the organization and direction of musical groups, cultural
presentations in the schools, and service as Second Counselor
in the Deming First Ward Bishopric (church assignment involving
supervision and orientation of leaders and teachers of 8 local
organizations for children and adults). Joined Boy Scouts of America
and served on a Pack Committee and a Troop Committee.
Grant Writing: I will write one or two grant proposals
for funding in areas such as technology in teaching, music and
the arts in education, or the Global Language and Culture Institute.
Faculty Development: I will assist the GGSC in technology
and training. I will set up computers, install programs, troubleshoot
problems, and orient faculty and staff.

5. Objective: Personal Relationships 15%
Student Evaluations : Develop rapport with students
as measured by advisement load and student evaluations.
Meetings: Attend departmental and university meetings and
retreats. Hold special meetings with key program and project personnel.
Increase interdisciplinary involvement in program and project
advisory committees to prepare for NCATE.
University and Department: I will contribute to discussions
on empowerment and interpersonal communications in order to improve
relationships and promote better decision making processes at
the GGSC and with the SOE. I will model team building, collaboration,
and interactive decision making.
Community: I will collaborate with Gallup and other school
districts more intensely to improve WNMU rapport and visibility.
I will strive to heal wounds and improve on the reputation of
the GGSC in the area. I have made many visits to schools and school
personnel, especially with cultural presentations to the students
and contributions to in-service for the teachers.
